Responsibility

At aida, we have an ongoing ambition to take more responsibility and become more sustainable. This applies all the way – from the design process and the choice of materials to production and logistics. With the view of sustainability as ‘sustainability is also good design in good quality,’ we focus on timelessness, high quality and durable materials, which will contribute to our products being usable for many years.

Materials

All our materials are chosen with a special focus on high quality, which gives the products a long lifespan if they are cared for and maintained.

Recycled materials

A large part of our work with responsibility is about recycling materials in production that would otherwise have been discarded. This is the case with both our leather placemats and our stoneware.

Leather Placemats

Our leather placemats are made from 95% recycled leather and 5% adhesive. Leather from an animal has an organic form, which means that when leather is used for bags, jackets and the like, there will be pieces of leather left over from the cuts. These pieces are still 100% leather, but they are too small to be used for larger products such as furniture and clothing. Instead, these small pieces can be broken down into even smaller pieces. To achieve a cohesive piece, the small pieces of leather are mixed with an adhesive. The leather and adhesive are then shaped into one piece of the right size. This process results in placemats that are made from 5% adhesive and 95% leather that would otherwise have been discarded.

Stoneware

We also recycle the material in the production of RAW Sandy Beige, which is made from a light stoneware mass, which in professional terms is called ‘speckled.’ The stoneware mass consists of surpluses from the production of white stoneware and speckled stoneware. The surplus clay is obtained when the products are cut “clean” and instead of discarding the clay that is cut, it is mixed into a new clay mass. In the Sandy Beige production, at least 50% of the clay is recycled, and we are continuously working to increase the proportion of recycling in the RAW productions.

Teak and linen

In our RAW universe, teak plays a big role, as teak wood is an extremely robust material that is almost impossible to wear out if it is treated correctly. Teak has a dense fiber structure, which makes it resistant to both heat and cold and ideal for use in the kitchen. Over time, teak can lose its shine, but with food-approved oil (for example, cooking oil) it can regain its shine. At the same time, it is possible to "clean" teak products with lemon and salt if odors should arise.

In the RAW universe, there are both tea towels and napkins, all made of linen, which is a natural material. Linen has some extremely hard-wearing fibers that make the material more durable. This means that if linen is treated according to our care guide, our linen tea towels and napkins can last a very long time.

Logistics

If you are a B2C customer and order from our webshop, you may find that the box in which your goods are delivered either looks a little used or has an incorrect description on the outside. This is because we try to reuse as many of our cardboard boxes as possible, as they rarely have any faults, even though they have transported our products from production to the warehouse. There is no reason to throw away a cardboard box just because it no longer looks “new”.
